No capping the possibilities from nuclear energy

Despite higher costs and scare factor, nuclear power plants remain on the agenda

On April 28, 1986, I arrived in Vienna to take up my post as head of the Energy Studies Department in the Opec Secretariat. I was looking forward to the change after more than six years as the head of refining and gas processing in Iraq at a time of great expansion in spite of the difficulties of the war with Iran.

It was a difficult time for Opec with oil prices under intense pressure and the grouping no longer able to defend prices, which fell from $28 (Dh102.76) a barrel to single digits inside a few months. But Vienna at that time was worried about two issues.

The first was the outburst of fear about the spread of Aids and HIV. People were anticipating the end of the world by calculating the rate of the spread of the disease and many organisations, Opec included, were invited to lectures given by doctors warning of doom and gloom and advising all kinds of measures to minimise the risk. But this issue soon fizzled out as the actual spread of the disease fell short of expectations.
